The gray-covered edition of "The Bible Hymnal" represents an earlier version of the hymnal used by the Radio Church of God and Worldwide Church of God prior to the more widely recognized 1974 "Purple Hymnal." The hymns were composed by Dwight Armstrong (1904-1984), younger brother of Herbert W. Armstrong, who devoted over 35 years of his life to setting the words of the Psalms and other scriptures to music in four-part harmony. Beginning with his first compositions copyrighted in 1948, Dwight Armstrong continued revising and adding hymns through 1952, 1958, and into the early 1970s. His wife Karen assisted with all of the compositions, helping set lyrics to the music.
