What's It Like to Be a Teen in Temuco, Chile?
Fanny Figueroa

How would you like to live in a country where there are more than 100 volcanoes? Chile is just such a country. Fortunately, the volcanoes seldom erupt and cause damage. Chile is on the lower west coast of South America. Although Chile averages less than 110 miles (176 kilometers) wide, it's more than 2,600 miles (4,160 kilometers) long. That means Chile could reach from Los Angeles, California, to Washington, D.C., or from London to Cairo! About 10 percent of the world's copper is mined in Chile. Forestry, agriculture, fishing and stock breeding are also important industries. Spanish is the main language for Chile's 11 million people. Fanny Figueroa, 17, is from Temuco, Chile, about 400 miles (640 kilometers) south of the nation 's capital, Santiago.
