Shark! The word instantly arouses fear, yet fascination. The shark has received lots of publicity in the last few years - much of it bad. Is its bad reputation deserved? How much do you know about sharks? Are they really fearless, savage creatures just waiting to lunch on the next hapless swimmer or diver to cross their path? What purpose do they serve in the undersea balance of nature? Sharks of all sizes. There are nearly 250 kinds of sharks, 90 percent of which do not pose any threat to man. Sharks come in many shapes and sizes, from the cigar-shaped mid-water shark, which measures less than 6 inches (15 centimeters) when full grown, to the whale shark, which can reach 60 feet (18 meters) and weigh more than 15 tons.
