We often hear it said that words are cheap, but they are not always so. The truth of the matter is that some words have exacted a high price - not so much in monetary currency as in the currency of an uneasy conscience, an undying quarrel or a family feud. As long as words remain unspoken, we are masters of them; but once spoken, our words master us. Some feel words are trivial; but again, this is not always so. Words can spawn gigantic troubles and launch far-reaching crusades. The apostle James certainly did not think words were trivial. Take time to reread James 3:5-8. Solomon had a lot to say about words. In Proverbs 15:1 he referred to the healing power of words. "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." One whose words are charged with hate and anger may well be overcome by an unexpected calm and modest reply.
