The United States has been shocked from east to west and north to south. I don't think there is a state or a city or a village or a hamlet across this country that doesn't realize, by now, this autumn of 1979, that the collapse of the dollar is imminent, and that what we are beginning to see is a little bit more serious than just the rise of prices from grocery store to grocery store, or perhaps the frustrating rise of the cost of gasoline. Up in Wisconsin Dells, I stopped by a Texaco station to fill up with fuel. I got out and asked the man to fill up with fuel and looked at the price on the fuel register. And actually, I couldn't tell what it was because there was a sign blotting out the normal area where the price is registered there, he said, "That we are now pricing our fuel a half-gallon." So, I asked him what the price was and then looked at the cash I had in my pocket. Then, realized I couldn't purchase a full tank of gasoline and wound up with 5 dollars' worth.
