An old and deadly disease, nearly forgotten by this generation, still lies smoldering in the rodent populations of the world, kept in check by strict health controls and natural barriers. Wars, modern transportation, and the rapid growth of cities have combined to help it make a feeble comeback. Here is the giant question: What if it were to hurdle the barriers that contain it, and return again in FULL force? To MOST Americans living in the sanitized, neatly disposable world of middle-class suburbia, the possibility of an insect-borne epidemic seems remote. At east it used to, before the recent outbreak of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis epidemic in Texas. Still, age-old scourges such as plague, yellow fever, typhus and dengue fever seem like a spectre out of the distant, cloudy past.
