Few people here in Europe and elsewhere around the globe grasp the magnitude of recent world events. For staggering crises, now threatening to tear Western Europe apart, are ultimately, impelling the nations of Western Europe toward complete and final unification. Time is of the essence. The October war in the Mideast jarred the European nations into renewed awareness of their own impotence in times of world crisis. Then, the severe oil shortages, affecting Europe vastly more than the United States, rubbed salt into the fresh wound. In Copenhagen recently, the nine member nations in the European Economic Community (EEC) publicly recommitted themselves to economic and political union before 1980. But how rapidly can the European nations genuinely unite so that they can "speak with one voice"? Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany and President Pompidou of France seem ready to push toward unification - howbeit each on his own terms - within a very few years.
