Paul Tibbets Jr. piloted the Enola Gay into position over his assigned target: Hiroshima, Japan. Only Col. Tibbets and two scientists on board knew what the strange- looking bomb the plane was carrying really was. When the target was in sight, Major Thomas Ferebee, bombardier, released the 10,000-pound bomb.
