How would you like to talk to someone on an exotic Pacific island or at the South Pole? Or how about someone on a ship, in an airplane or even in earth orbit? How can you call people where no telephone wires stretch? You can communicate with people over great distances (without being charged long-distance rates!) through the exciting hobby of amateur radio. Worldwide, more than a million amateur radio operators, often called hams, do just that. Amateur radio is the personal use of shortwave radio for direct, worldwide communications on a one-to-one basis. It is not the same as CB (Citizen's Band) radio, which became popular in the last decade and only can be used over short distances.
