It may also conjure up hunger pangs for the millions of people who have tried diets by the dozen in an unending battle of the bulge. Is there a way to lose weight safely and permanently? A new theory, the set point theory, suggests that a part of the brain chooses the amount of fat the body needs and then does everything it can to retain that fat. What this means, according to set point theory, is that when you diet, your body adjusts itself to protect its fat level. You may find that you are continually hungry when you're dieting. This is your body's way of encouraging you to build its fat supplies back up.
