The Japanese call them shinkansen. In Britain, they're called APTs. But wherever you are, you'll call them fast. They are high-speed trains, designed to carry passengers quickly from city to city. They could be zipping into your area before long. The shinkansen, Japanese for bullet trains," have been running in Japan since 1964. In their 20 years of operation, the 120-mile-an-hour (193 kilometer) trains have carried more than two billion passengers. The Japanese instantly fell in love with the shinkansen. But other countries weren't so quickly smitten. It took a while, but bullet trains are now being built in other countries.
