The condition produces severe reactions to synthetic materials, common chemicals, cigarette smoke, car exhaust, natural gas and other by-products of the 20th century. Essentially, the disease is a malfunction in the immune system, which defends the body against infection. Dr. Irvine Korman, a specialist in environmental medicine, describes the illness as "the flip side of AIDS."
