My mission seemed impossible - was it even worth trying? The man suddenly looked up. His eyes narrowed in concentration. I felt the grip of a viselike terror when he said, "Here comes a train!" Kayo and I looked at each other, our faces etched with fear. We heard the faint, distant rumble. A train was coming, and fast! "You've got to stop it!" the man yelled. "You've got to flag it down!" "'Here," stammered Kayo. "You're the fastest. Take this and try to stop it!" I felt the cold flashlight he tossed me land in my hands. I looked at it, and then down the dark rail bed.
