What comes to your mind when you hear the words the Bahamas? Do you imagine primitive natives living in straw huts? Or do you think of long, sandy beaches and clear, blue water? To the surprise of many people, the Bahamas is as modern and up-to-date as anywhere else in the world. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas, made up of about 700 islands and more than 2,000 islets, is just off the coast of Florida. The archipelago (island group) stretches 760 miles (1,220 kilometers), but has less than 5,400 square miles (13,900 square kilometers) in land area. Only about 30 of the islands are inhabited. The Tropic of Cancer runs through some of these islands, so the Bahamas has a warm climate year round.
