"BASKETBALL IS most magical when all players apply their talents in a way most helpful to the team," according to Sports Illustrated writer John Papanek. "The scorers must score, the rebounders must rebound, the passers pass, the subs do their chores cheerfully." Mr. Papanek is describing teamwork. If a basketball team had only guards, who would rebound the ball? If there were five tall forwards on one team, who would dribble and control the ball? The coach plays a vital role, too. Without a leader, most groups attempt success in vain. A coach is necessary to direct the players, to see what mistakes they're making and where they can best apply their strong points, and then to call plays and substitute players accordingly.
