Toes tap, hands clap and bodies sway as the music plays. For some reason the rhythm of the music causes you to move with the beat. At the same time your heart rate and breathing quicken. Sadness turns to joy. Heavy feet become light. A new surge of energy floods your body. It's great to be alive. All of these changes can and do take place while listening to music, without the listener having to think about it. Music can lift your spirits and energize your body. Why do bands play march music at sporting events? If you have ever played or coached, you probably realize marc h music arouses powerful emotions that strengthen the players' courage and resolve. You may have experienced something similar when your national anthem is played. Chills run up and down your spine. All of a sudden you are filled with emotion and you experience a sense of loyalty. The music has stirred up these emotions.
