John Watkins sat nervously as the basketball coach read a list of names - those not chosen for the team. Tryouts had been long and strenuous, but John had not been removed from the team in the first three cuts. Now the coach was making the final cuts. As each name was called out John compared his playing ability with that of the person named. He felt he was better than some, but not as good as others. The coach continued, "... Martin, Steve Turner, John Watkins..." It was like being hit by a bolt of lightning. John was cut from the team - he was devastated. The coach called those who were cut over to the side and told them they were all good basketball players and the choice was difficult, but there were too many players so they would not be able to play with the team this year.
