In our fast-moving world, growing up can be confusing. What does it mean to become mature? By age 12, boys in some primitive tribes have already become experts at spearing fish, tracking wild game and gathering edible grains and fruits. Even before teenage, the girls in these tribes are skilled at building fires, skinning game and making clothes. Boys are ready to support families. Girls bear children at an early age. While some cultures consider preteens mature, today in many parts of the Western world young people are not considered adults until age 18 - or even 21. In different cultures and at different times, the meaning of maturity has varied greatly. What is meant by maturity, anyway, and why is it important?
