Kathy Mendez is a 17-year-old from Hacienda Heights, California. Denise Ann Metzler is a 17-year-old from Farmington, Minnesota. Though they live nearly 1,900 miles apart, Kathy and Denise have a lot in common. They both enjoy sports and other activities, both are interested in computers and, like nearly 52 million other people around the world, both Kathy and Denise are deaf. Kathy and Denise live in a silent world that hearing people can only imagine. Things we take for granted, like listening to music or even the everyday sounds of nature, are absent for the deaf.
