Last summer, after several amusement park deaths in the United States, people began asking this question. Now, as the parks open in the Northern Hemisphere, the controversy will rage again. Between 1973 and 1985, at least 90 deaths involving rides and other attractions occurred in U.S. amusement parks and carnivals. In 1984 alone, an estimated 10,378 persons were injured at parks, according to information received from hospital emergency rooms. Amusement park defenders are quick to point out that, compared to other things we do every day, the parks are safe.
