Exiled Soviet writer Aleksandr Solzhenilsyn unleashed a storm of controversy when he delivered the commencement address at Harvard University in early June. In his hour-long address Solzhenilsyn tackled not the evils of the Soviet system but instead denounced contemporary Western, especially American, society. Speaking "like an Old Testament prophet," to use Time magazine's words, the literary great decried such evils as cowardice among the ruling elite, crass and mass materialism, letter-of-the-law legalism, which has opened the floodgates to all aspects of immorality, and a licentious superficial press, which acts as a law unto itself.
