The ultimate bulwark against drug abuse is the family. It's time we understood its crucial role in protecting children from drugs. A distorted version of the 23rd Psalm was discovered in a closed car next to the dead body of a young heroin addict. The authoress was 23, but the message could have been scribbled by any number of 14-, 15-, or 16-year-olds. It read: King Heroin is my shepherd; I shall always want. He maketh me to lie down in the gutters. 2 He leadeth me beside the troubled waters. He destroyeth my soul. 3 He leadeth me in the paths of wickedness. 4 Yea, I shall walk through the valley of poverty and will fear no evil, for thou, Heroin, are with me. 5 Thy Needle and Capsule comfort me. Thou strippest the table of groceries in the presence of my family. Thou robbest my head of reason. 6 My cup of sorrow runneth over. Surely heroin addiction shall stalk me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Damned forever.
