The tempest-in-a-teapot stirred up by Betty Ford, the First Lady, when she said she "wouldn't be surprised" if her 18year-old daughter Susan - -the nation's "First Teen-ager" - admitted to an affair, only underscores the mass transformation in moral values that has swept over America in the past two to three decades. Within this time span, pornography has blossomed from a peek-a-boo, "sunbathing magazines" subculture into a multibillion- dollar industry whose standard-bearer "girlie slicks" far exceed many conventional magazines in both circulation and advertising revenue. "Adult" book stores, dispensing everything imaginable, and then some, to arouse every conceivable prurient interest, abound in nearly every city, having successfully contested and overwhelmed one municipal code after another. Not to be outdone, the motion picture industry has moved so far beyond Clark Gable's first "damn" as to be almost unrecognizable.
