Twice in the 1970s angry motorists experienced what it is like to be deprived of an essential element of modern life - petroleum. But this was a mere inconvenience compared to the economic calamity that would result from a cutoff of nonfuel minerals absolutely essential to modern industry. No parts of this unstable and potentially unstable - world are more critical than the Middle East and southern Africa. By a quirk of geography, these two regions contain the two most critical resources for the industrial world-oil and minerals. What the Middle East in general and Saudi Arabia in particular is to petroleum, southern Africa, and specifically the Republic of South Africa, is to nonfuel minerals.
