Beirut. Lebanon. I just escaped being detained in revolt-ridden Syria by the skin of my teeth! I was in one of the last cars to make it back to Lebanon before the border was closed. Armed soldiers stopped our car several rimes along the way. Many were carrying not only rifles, but submachine guns. Our driver was becoming concerned. At each Stop, other civilians ran up excitedly to ask if we knew any details about what was taking place in Damascus. At the time, we didn't - except that we were turned back on the outskirts of the city with the news that a new revolt was taking place - the second attempt in less than a week - and that armed conflict was spreading through the city.
